RAILWAY STATION.
2000. CARTAGENA.

The new proposal annexes the existing building through the clear articulation of architectural elements.  In this manner, a glass wall acts as the connecting element between the new building and the existing station, achieving a clear dialogue between the two structures while at the same time fully preserving the character of the existing building.

On the facade, the proposal uses new architectural elements, such as an ondulating canopy that simulates the rhythm of arches.  The heights of the new structure have been carefully designed to establish a clear relationship with those of the existing building.

Lastly, the big tower, the distinctive icon of the complex, is the grand finishing element of both structures.  Its location, near the fast road, converts it into the predominant vertical element of the whole, however it does not compete with the main entrance of the existing building which, due to its location relative to the city, maintains its importance.

Opposite the principal historic facade of the old building, a bus stop and taxi rank are planned to facilitate access for arriving and departing travellers.

The proposal plans to maintain all existing structures.  The platform area will be moved back to make space for a new patio.  The resulting space will be a large semi-urban area that will represent a grand doorway to the city.
