RAILWAY STATION.
2000. ALBACETE.

The location of the railway station represents an important urban boundary in the city of Albacete.

The distinctive architectural elements on the façade allude to the visual axes and at the same time serve to break down the hermetic nature of the façade.  The transversal axis corresponds to the station vestibule and creates the effect of a large doorway to the city.  Two avenues, Estación and García Lorca, intersect at the portal that gives access to the station forecourt.  In turn, the forecourt becomes an important public space which also works as an arrivals and departures area.

The plan for the Albacete railway station is a clear diagram, a series of spaces along two orthogonal axes.  The first axis marks the access to the station from the train platforms.  The traveller or visitor first enters a large vestibule or gallery with shops, a small restaurant area and, at the far end, the travel centre.  This vestibule acts as a pivot between the commercial area and the entry to platforms.  The transparency of this area allows a clear and ordered vision of the spatial organization of the complex.  An escalator communicates the upper level and leisure area; a second escalator, located at the far end next to the travel centre, leads to the access tunnels to the train platforms.
